Mixed slowpitch is a versatile game with five men and five women per team and is a hitting game rather than with the emphasis being on the pitching and striking out of batters (which is the ‘norm’ in fastpitch and baseball). Although mixed slowpitch can be very competitive at the top level, it also has a strong social aspect to it, which combined with its all-action style, makes it the most popular form of softball in the UK. The London Meteors currently has three softball teams in various divisions of the Greater London Softball Mixed League. The season starts in early May and runs for approximately fifteen weeks. There is one league match a week, any night from Monday to Thursday (games start at 7pm). Our home games are played at Finsbury Park and all away games are played at grounds which are easily reached by public transport. If you are interested in getting involved in the 2010 season, please read the notes below and drop us a line.
We are looking for players at all levels, from experienced players to people with some degree of skill and experience or inexperienced people with good potential. We are also looking for commitment - players who are able to play in all, or at least most, of the league games, as well as some tournaments. We also welcome partners, family and friends who may not want to play but would like to be involved or part of a club that is actively involved in all areas of softball.
Fees for playing league games is currently £80 and are paid in advance of the season starting. This covers affiliation fees to the London Softball Federation (LSF) and British Softball Federation (BSF), third party insurance cover, pitch hire, balls, end of season club trophies and awards and general admin costs. Tournament costs are additional, but London tournaments are generally around £15 for a weekend. You will need to buy a club shirt at £20. You will also need black pants or shorts. Club caps are also available at £10 but are not mandatory.
We can provide gloves for beginners at the spring training sessions but if you are selected for a team you will need your own glove (these normally start at around £40). There should be plenty of bats around if you would prefer not to buy your own (a decent bat starts at around £100). Trainers are adequate footwear at beginners' level but you will probably want to purchase a pair of cleats if you wish to play on a more regular basis. These must have moulded rubber soles and must not have steel or screw in spikes. There are links at the bottom of the page to our preferred equipment suppliers.
